Sanctity of the Eagle
In my last post I was talking about how young some of the scouts are getting. I also discussed the projects and how I feel about the fact of how some are not and should not be true Eagle Projects.
Well I just read in my newspaper how a 14yr boy earned his Eagle by collecting money for a playground for a local family shelter. Now this is not a project, build the playground, prep the ground, lay sod, there is so much more he could have done. I would love to see how he got the donations (or just a check from his dads firm?).
Now you may think I am being cruel or even unfair but this is Eagle this is my life what I worked 11 years to get and for a 14yr to raise some money and put any other time into the project, and I know that I am being unfair and I do not know the extent of his project but when I read that something like this is done I really am hurt and I feel that the Eagle Rank is sliding down and may not mean anything if anyone who raises money for charity can get the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
Now to make this post not so sad and angry I do want to show everyone a true Eagle Scout project which in my eyes has met and qualifies for a true Eagle project. Now this was taken from my local paper on the same page as the boy from above but I know what he did and I like it, instead of rewording the whole thing this is taken from the PE.com website (which will be linked at the bottom).
“John Tetzlaff, 17, of Riverside completed his Eagle Scout service project Nov. 3 at the Jurupa Mountains Cultural Center. He planted and staked several oak trees and installed an irrigation system to sustain them into adulthood. He sought donations, organized volunteers and supervised the work.”
You see how this told me what I wanted to hear. He planted, now I know that as the Supervisor you do not get down and do the dirty work the day of the project but your supervising and that is correct.
Thanks for Reading and please forward this on to everyone you know
